Professor Darko Fischer, PhD, is one of those Osijek citizens who will always remain in Osijek’s history due to his extraordinary contribution to the science and education, and also to the economy and cultural life of our city. This, very versatile expert and scientist, a retired professor of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Osijek, as well as of some other faculties of the Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek, was born in Osijek in 1938, where he attended primary and the secondary school. In 1961 he graduated from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Zagreb, where he also worked as a teaching assistant at the Institute of Electronics for some time. He worked in Radioindustrija Zagreb and Merkur enterprise in Zagreb. He spent one academic year at the University of Birmingham. He received his Master’s degree in the field of semiconductors in 1969 at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Zagreb. Then he returned to his hometown Osijek and worked as a programmer, system programmer and Data Analysis Department Head in Saponia Osijek (chemical industry) from 1970 until 1979. From 1979 until 1986 he worked as a lecturer at the Faculty of Economics in Osijek. He taught academic subjects in the field of computer sciences at several other faculties of the University of Osijek. From 1986 he worked at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Osijek as a lecturer, assistant professor and associate professor. He received his Doctor’s degree in the field of algorithms for planar networks at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing in Zagreb in 1996. He published several scientific works and around 20 expert ones. He is the author of several university textbooks and of several programming solutions for commercial use. Although he retired in 2003, he stayed active working as an external associate at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Department of Mathematics and the Department of Physics of the Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek.
At the same time, all of his life he has been active in other walks of life as well: he was the president of Osijek Jewish Community and is its lifelong honorary president; he is a great connoisseur and is actively engaged in the study of history, culture, tradition and cultural heritage of the Jews in Osijek and Croatia.
He wrote and published Sketches from Diaspora, a book of short stories on the subject of the Jewish Diaspora.
A famous sculptor, born in Osijek in 1906 as Oskar Neumann, in a very prominent Osijek Jewish family. He became world famous for his portraits of British royal family, S. Freud, M. Thatcher, General Eisenhower, H. S. Truman and the series of bustes of Winston Churchil. He died in 1985 in Oxford.
