Jewish Cemetery of Kolkata

The Jewish Cemetery in Kolkata (Calcutta) houses two genizot, the older one is sealed off, as it was filled to capacity, but the new one still towers above the graves of the Jewish Cemetery. According to historical records, the first recorded Jewish immigrant to Kolkata (Calcutta) was Shalon Cohen in 1798 from Aleppo in present day Syria, soon the Jewish community in the city started to grow. The first recorded Jewish death in the city happened on 1st Jan. 1812 and the community needed a cemetery as the deceased Hacham Moses needed to be buried. Today the Jewish Cemetery on the Narkelgdanga Main Road is still active and contains hundreds of graves but sadly the graves of Moses or Cohen can no longer be traced. Some records suggest the presence of another private Jewish Cemetery in the nearby 24, U. C. Banrejee Road, but it probably no longer exists.

Hasköy Jewish Cemetery

Haskoy is one of the oldest districts where Jews used to live and one of the older still-used Jewish cemeteries is located there. During the many centuries the Haskoy Cemetery was used, as a result of earthquakes as well as the destructive intrusions of private people and official authorities, the plot has been significantly reduced. Especially in 1972 when highways and the Golden Horn Bridge were being built, hundreds of tombstones had to be moved.

Textile Cemetary

European-Jewish cemetery (the old name – “Textile” cemetery) is located in the central part of the City, next to “Textile factory”. The first graves here are dated back to 1944. The number of graves from 1944 to 1965 is 14,320 people, from 1965 to 1988 – 2,150 people, from 1988 to 2003 – 581 people, the total number of graves is 16,300. The cemetery consists of 8 sectors: 6 sectors are Jewish, 2 sectors are Russian. Each sector has 12 rows, but there are also some sectors with 30 rows. The state of graves and tombs is highly different from one to another. The cemetery also has Bukhara-Jewish sector with more than 1,000 graves. All graves and tombs here are in a very good and proper condition. The sector is officially counted as a part of European-Jewish cemetery. source and photos. inventory [January 2010]

Samarkand Jewish Cemetery

Kochi Jewish Cemetery

The Jewish Cemetery in Kochi, also called the Gan Shalom, is part of the Paradesi Synagogue and was once one of the main cemeteries for Jews living in the city. Today, the cemetery is largly undisturbed and mostly only avaliable for visitors to view through the steel gate. Members from the town’s small Jewish community are still buried here.

Tomb of Nehemia Mota

The resting place of the Yemenite-born scholar known as the Kochi Kabbalist is not in the cemetery but on a narrow side street off Synagogue Lane—also called Jew Street. After his death in 1615, stories of his miraculous deeds circulated in the community, including one stating that he could fly through the air to reach home in time for Shabbat prayers. The tomb has become a sacred pilgrimage site for locals of all religions. It has been painted aqua and white, its Hebrew inscription and crown daubed a saffron color.

Bukhara Old Jewish Cemetery

The Old Jewish Cemetery is Bukhara has more than 10,000 graves from the once thriving Jewish community that inhabited the region. It is located at the West end of Ibrokhim Muminov Street and the entrance can easily be spotted by the blue dome with the Star of David. The cemetery is quite large and contains not only thousands of graves, but a memorial wall of Bukharans who died during WWII, at a time when more than 10% of the Bukharian population were Jews.

Some of the well-known people buried in this cemetery include Composer Suleyman Yudokov (died in 1990), Doctor of philology sciences, professor N.M. Mallaev (died in 1996), Honoured coach of Uzbekistan R.R. Davidov (died in 1963), People’s artist of Uzbekistan E. Kalantarov (died in 1984), and Honoured artist of Uzbekistan, professor Yu. Ishokov.

Jewish Cemetery of Vestre

Mosaisk Vestre Cemetery opened in 1886. The first burial in Mosaisk Vestre Cemetery was the 19. January 1886, and it is still in use.

From October 1943 until May 1945, when the most Danish Jews lived as refugees in Sweden, 26 Jews died in Denmark and they were buried in this cemetery, sometimes with the assistance of vicars from the Danish Lutheran Church.
