The Jewish heritage tour of Greece will take place from October 22nd to 31st, 2023.

The tour will visit 11 cities/towns in Greece: Athens, Chalkida, Volos, Pelion (Makrynitsa), Larissa, Trikala, Meteora, Ioannina, Metsovo, Veroia, and Thessaliniki.
I will include 8 beautiful synagogues (in most of the above places) and the most important Jewish monuments in Greece.
It is organized by Atlantis Travel Agency, the oldest travel agency in Greece (since 1948) !

The cost is 1295 EURO per person in a double room, including dinners and happenings!
We will not be travelling on Shabbat! Kosher meals are available upon request.

Jewish Tour of Athens - private walking tour

A private half-day tour, that combines the incredible Jewish history of Athens, with the rich cultural history of the city. We walk in the alleys of Plaka, passing the ancient Agora, where the ancient Synagogue once was, and heading for the eternal Jewish neighborhoods, Monastiraki, Thissio and Psiri... Among our walks and stops in the winding alleys of those charming neighborhoods, you will see the houses and shops and feel the ambiance of some of the oldest regions in the city of Athens. You will hear the history of the Jewish population in Athens and Greece and you will see old photographs of the places we visit, making it easy for you to visualize the everyday life of the Greek-Jews, on those very alleys. We will visit the old Jewish market, still named after the Jewish family who opened the first antique shop there. We will of course visit the Synagogues of Athens, and the Monument of the Holocaust. The classical Athenian archeological sites are also included! We will pass by some Roman monuments, the remains of the Ottoman Mosques, Byzantine churches and beautiful neoclassical constructions of the 19th century. Furthermore, we can stop for coffee under the Acropolis, where we will rest, getting the best view of the Parthenon. This unique Jewish Walking Tour in Athens really does include ALL the Jewish sites of the city, plus many important non Jewish sites. All in one morning! There is always the possibility (optional) of ending the tour with a nice Mediterranean kosher lunch of traditional Sephardic recipes and some new ones by the Rabbi's wife!

Jewish Heritage Tour Throughout Greece

The Jewish presence in Greece dates back to the 6th century BCE, when the first Jews came to settle in the Greek territory after the destruction of Solomon’s Temple. These Jews established strong communities, long before the Roman invasion. When the Romans conquered Greece in 146 BCE., the Greeks called themselves «Rhomaioi» (citizens of Rome), while the Jews, in order to differentiate themselves from their fellow Greek citizens who were pagans at that time, called themselves «Romaniotes», which means «citizens of «Romania» (the word «Romania», in this context, indicates the eastern part of the Roman Empire, and bears no connection with the state of Romania). After the expulsion of Jews from Spain and Portugal, a lot of Sephardic Jews settled in the Balkan region, mostly in the Northern part of Greece. In addition, some Ashkenazi Jews arrived in Greece following the newly appointed King Otto of Bavaria in the 19th century. This mixture of the “indigenous” Romaniotes and the newcomers, formed a population of approximately 80.000 people on the eve of WWII. Unfortunately, of these 80.000 Jews, only one-eighth, that is, 10.000 souls, survived the war. Today, less than 4.500 Jews live in Greece. Jewish Tour Throughout Greece During WWII, Greece suffered one of the highest percentage of losses in Jewish population (87%). Before the war, there were Synagogues in over 32 cities. Only in Thessaloniki (also known as Salonica) there were more than 60 functioning Synagogues! Unfortunately, the vast majority of them was, either burned down by the Nazis, or never reclaimed, as, in most towns, no Jews came back… Nowadays, there are 8 active communities, however, most of them are facing a population decline… We are very lucky and proud that some of our holy sites like Synagogues, cemeteries and monuments, are still standing and being preserved, thus helping us and the new generations maintain Greek Jewry’s traditions alive.

The Pressbook celebrates the one year anniversary of the Jewish Silk Road Portal launch, an amazing example of using Jewish travel as a means of cultural diplomacy, whilst highlighting the significant Jewish contribution to the ancient trade route. Kudos to our participating partners from the Kiriaty Foundation (Turkey), National Board of Tourism of #Georgia, National Board of Tourism of #Uzbekistan, and Israeli Embassy of #India.
