Krakow, once home to a great Jewish culture, is witnessing a rebirth of Jewish life. Only 60 miles from Auschwitz, the city’s Jewish quarter has been restored and is alive with many activities. There is a JCC, a new Jewish museum, university program, and Jewish festivals. This short film features the “7@nite festival” in Krakow’s seven synagogues, one of many JDC programs in Poland to restore Jewish life and culture.

Prague boasts one of Europe's oldest recorded Jewish communities, first mentioned by a Mizrahi-Jewish traveller Ibrahim ibn Yaqub in 965. Since then, the community never ceased to exist, despite a number of pogroms and expulsions, the Holocaust, and subsequent antisemitic persecution by the Communist regime in the 20th century. Nowadays, the Jewish community of Prague numbers approximately 2,000 members. There are a number of synagogues of all Jewish denominations, a Chabad centre, an old age home, a kindergarten, Lauder Schools, Judaic Studies department at the Charles University, kosher restaurants and even a kosher hotel. Famous Jews from Prague include the Maharal, Franz Kafka, Miloš Forman and Madeleine Albright.

Culinary Experience in Segovia

Segovia, Spain. This Castillean city, where Jews once lived 500 years ago, has joined the network of Spanish cities to highlight their Jewish heritage. Here, in the former Jewish quarter, you will find El Fogon Sefardi (The Sephardic Cookpot), a restaurant that evokes the culinary past of Spanish Jewry. . Delicious preparations of stews, dried fruits and fish. (Not kosher.) During the making of our film, "Rediscovering Sepharad - A Journey Through Spain's Jewish Past", we stopped here for lunch and watched the chef work his magic. We also include a segment by Paco Diez , the Spanish musician and catalyst for reviving popularity of Sephardic music and instruments. He regales us about the noble eggplant.

The oldest official document available mentioning a Jewish settlement in Trieste goes back to the year 1236 and it is composed of a notarial deed that mentions an economic transaction made by a certain Bishop Giovanni: he paid 500 'marche' to the Jew Daniel David, who had spent them to fight thieves on the Carso.

The earliest archaeological evidence of Hebrew presence in Iberia consists of a 2nd-century gravestone found in Mérida. From the late 6th century onward, following the Visigothic monarchs' conversion from Arianism to the Nicene Creed, conditions for Jews in Iberia considerably worsened

Virtual Krakow

The first recorded history of Jews in Kraków, Poland dates back to the 13th century. Jews began to own land and homes in their quarter and in neighboring quarters of the city in 1312. The city was an important scholarly center during the Golden Age of Polish Jewry and was home to prominent rabbis such as Rabbi Joel Sirkes (1561-1640), known as the "Bach" after his halachic work (published 1631-1640); and Rabbi Moses Isserles (1530-1572/82), author of the Mapah, glosses on the Shulchan Aruch of Rabbi Joseph Caro. Even after the events of 1648-1649 the city remained a Jewish center until the Holocaust. Rabbis included Rabbi Samuel Ehrenfeld (1835-1883), known as the Chassan Sofer. During the Nazi occupation, most of the 68,000 Jews of Krakow were expelled from the city (1940), 15,000 remained in the Kraków Ghetto until 1943 when they were deported to Belzec extermination camp, where they were murdered.
