Gimtadienis tęsiasi! Ir nieko už gerą obuolių pyragą geriau nebūna! Ypač kai gimtadienis sutampa su Naujų 5783 metų atėjimu. Nuotrauka iš restorano Bistro 18. Vilnius’ Choral Synagogue.
2020 08 20. Vilnius, Lithuania
“Lithuania’s capital was once known throughout the world as the Jerusalem of the North. Vilnius was home to over 100 synagogues and prayer houses. <...> Now, the Choral Synagogue is the only synagogue in Vilnius. It survived the Second World War without significant damage. The prayer house was designed by architect Dovydas Rozenhauzas and was opened during the 1903 Jewish New Year. There is an area on the second floor of the Mauritanian-style synagogue dedicated to women and the choir. Worshipping takes place every day; people pray in accordance to longstanding religious traditions.” ~ govilnius

Starry Nights In Glass Quarter!
2020 08 15. Vilnius, Lithuania
“For more than 600 years, the quarter that once occupied most of the present Old Town was a Jewish neighbourhood of goldsmiths, glassblowers, craftspeople and financiers. In fact, the Goldsmiths Guild was founded here 1495, followed by the first glass manufactory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in 1547. This historic community was named the Glass Quarter in 2018, and accounts for the fact that at one point there were once three Glass Streets within it.” ~ govilnius Nowadays it is also place of arts and crafts and a lot of beauty. In Summer 2020, the skies in the street were adorned with beautifully crafted stars!

Jewish water carrier is slowly walking from house to house bringing joy to the neighborhood residents. Water is everything. No water no life.
===
Water carrier is as poor as people around, even worse, his job is very little paid. Very little. Usually he walks slowly slowly, he is tired and bored. He watches at his feet thinking about his daughter and blind wife. Sometimes he finds coins. Well not sometimes, he actually earns another salary collecting coins from the ground.
===
But that was not the story of this water carrier. This water carrier is looking up and counting stars!
"...As, on the old synagogue, a frozen water carrier,
Small beard tilted, stands counting the stars"
From the poem VILNIUS (1926) by Moyshe Kulbak
===
This beautuful sculpture by Romualdas Kvintas has been recently launched in the old town of Vilnius. We will visit it and hear more water carrier stories on our Jewish Vilna tour and Litvak tour with litvak.shtetls and zydiskasisvilnius
Can't wait until we can travel again!

🇫🇷 Have you ever heard of Romain Gary, a French writer, pilot, diplomat and a big big big lier?
🤪 Why do I call him a lier, I will explain in the comments, if someone asks.
===
But do you know:
✡ he was a Jewish? He was born as Roman Katzev (or Kacew) in 1914 in Vilnius, then Russian Empire.
🔥 his last name, Gary, sounds like a Russian word meaning "Burn!"? "Gari gari" were the words from a Russian romance his mother Mina liked to sing.
👞he once tried to eat a rubber boot?!!!
At the age of 9 he fell in love with a girl Valentina who wanted to verify his love giving him various "eating tasks". Once she asked him to eat a shoe.
Photo: young Romain Gary at his childhood house, ready for the winter and holding a rubber boot in his hands (the second photo). Romualdas Kvintas sculpute "Boy with a rubber boot".
