On Rosh HaShanah, it is customary to let go of our sins and the moments in the year when we fell short, by literally casting out the leftovers, the crumbs, that we find in the depths of our pockets.

We share our tashlich booklet with you, as a ritual you can do by yourself or with your loved ones, in your own time. We have also recorded musical tracks, so you can bring some melodies into your at-home tashlich ritual.

Rescued from a house about to be demolished in Kolkata in the 1960s, this glazed earthenware tile from our Collection depicts the prophet Jonah escaping from the whale.

In the Hebrew Bible, the Book of Jonah is the fifth book in a series of books called the Minor Prophets. The story, which is in essence a drama between a passive man & an active god, has become a well-known tale through popular children`s stories & in Judaism, is typically the Haftarah for the afternoon of Yom Kippur because of its depiction of God`s willingness to forgive all those who repent.

This Sunday evening is Erev Yom Kippur, ushering in a time of atonement, fasting, prayer & reflection. As we welcome this highest of Holy Days, we wish you g’mar chatimah tova.

Can you believe that Rosh Hashanah is just around the corner?

To get into the simcha spirit, we`re sharing this delightful honey cake dish from our Collection. This colourful dish has been hand-painted with sweet flowers in stunning hues of red. There is even a fuzzy bumble bee searching for nectar.

As a bonus, the artist, fionahiscock, shares some insight into the piece: `The decoration is an integral part of the work. My interest in the botanical has recently extended to insects & I was immediately drawn to the idea of making a platter for honey cake as I could incorporate my favourite themes: blossoms to attract the bee, the fruit & the insect itself.`

ANNOUNCEMENT | CHAGALL
Jewish Museum of Australia
09 June to 10 December 2023

I am pleased to announce my forthcoming exhibition on CHAGALL as this year’s flagship exhibition at the Jewish Museum of Australia.

The exhibition will tell the story of Marc Chagall as a twentieth century visionary through his art, architecture, poetry and printmaking. It will weave its way through the Jewish Museum’s permanent collection and showcase rarely seen works in the temporary galleries in an immersive display designed by annatregloan.

CHAGALL offers a symbolic nod to the Jewish Museum’s first exhibition in 1995 about his biblical works and dedicated to the Museum’s visionary inaugural director, the late Dr Helen Light AM.

The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive public programme and the first iteration of the museum’s Contemporary Australian Artist Commission by yvettecoppersmith.

Tickets for CHAGALL go on sale in May.
