Jewish Cultural Festival

The first Jewish Cultural Festival took place in 1998 with the intent to introduce Jewish culture to people of other cultures. This included Jewish music, films, dance, art, and books.  The center of the event is in Great Synagogue on Dohany street, the second largest synagogue in the world.

Bankito Festival

"Bánk is a tiny village in Nógrád County with its not-so-tiny Lake Bánk in the middle. It has everything a tiny village built around a lake could need: a small store, a tobacco shop, a pizza place, a pub, some hotels, motels and a lakeshore eatery. Plus the extremely friendly locals. Bánkitó Festival has been in town for 10 years, mostly around the Lakeshore and the Camp, though throughout the years, we ventured out to settle around the Reeds and the Meadow. Besides the lake, the small wooden cabins and the venues hiding around small clearings throughout the enclosing forest make Bánkitó the festival it is." -Bankito

Shoes on the Danube Bank

Sculptors Gyula Pauer and Can Togay have created a moving memorial to these Holocaust atrocities that sits in front of the magnificent Parliament building on the edge of the river. What visitors will see are 60 pairs of rusted period shoes cast out of iron. Different sizes and styles reflect how nobody was spared from the brutality of the Arrow Cross militia (the shoes depict children, women, businessmen, sportsmen etc.). The memorial was designed to honour the Jews who were massacred by Fascist Hungarian militia belonging to the Arrow Cross Party in Budapest during the Second World War. They were ordered to take off their shoes (shoes were valuable and could be stolen and resold by the militia after the massacre), and were shot at the edge of the water so that their bodies fell into the river and were carried away. The memorial represents their shoes left behind on the bank. Behind the sculpture lies a 40 meter long, 70 cm high stone bench where at three points are cast iron signs, with the following text in Hungarian, English, and Hebrew: "To the memory of the victims shot into the Danube by Arrow Cross militiamen in 1944–45. Erected 16 April 2005." Anna Well and Medicinal Bath

Only a single public bath survived the devastating Great Flood of 1879, thus, city leaders decided to have a new one built in order to satisfy arising local needs. A design contest was soon issued that the renowned Budapest-based architects Adolf Láng and Antal Steinhardt won.

The New Synagogue

The New Synagogue of Szeged is considered as the masterpiece of the famous Jewish architect Lipót Baumhorn; it is the second largest synagogue in Hungary and the fourth largest one in the world. It is still a functioning one, being the third synagogue of the community.

The Pick Family

Pick salami is a word famous trademark that was introduced by Mark Pick in 1883. He had three sons: Jenő, a salami producer, Móric, an architect, and Lajos (Petri), a sculptor. He was an honoured member of the Jewish community as well as that of the city. He financially supported railway development, building the New Synagogue, local schools and organizations. During this walk, you will learn about the family story, will see their dwelling places, and will learn about their special winter salami product, the first factory, and a number of palaces built by Móric who fell victim to the Shoah.

Walk in the Old Jewish District

During this two-hour-long tour, I will introduce you the history of Jews in Szeged from the end of the 18th century until the present days by showing and visiting their homes, palaces, schools and synagogues. You will visit both the Old and the New Synagogue that is the fourth largest one in the world, built in 1903. The building underwent a complete external renovation in 2017 when its Biblical garden was also restored.

The Other Jewish Tour of Budapest

This private, 5-hour tour takes you to all the hidden spots of Budapest filled with Jewish history and culture. You will have the opportunity to meet an active member of the local Jewish community and gain a comprehensive understanding of modern Jewish life in Budapest. The Tiszavirág Szeged is a unique place in Hungary where design and tradition in gastronomy and architecture come together. The Balassa House had been a part of the great Balassa estate, including Kistelek and Sándorfalva, before becoming state-owned. Salamon Politzer a famous Jewish goldsmith built it in 1858-59. The Balassa House is one of those romantic-style buildings from the 1860s, where little is known about those Jewish craftsmen who demonstrated splendid taste and knowledge in architecture, applied arts and decoration. The building’s balcony is volute, and the stair’s bannister reflects renaissance influence. As for its function, it used to be a commercial-civil house, where other famous Jewish citizens like Soma Bak and Lajos Pollák used to practise law at the beginning of the 1950s. The building became state-owned in 1952. Tiszavirág is a wonderfully renovated historical townhouse wich stands in the center of the historical Jewish quater of Szeged. The four-start hotel has 12 rooms, a bar, restaurant, café, conference room and SPA. A warm and welcoming place where you will immediately feel at home no matter if you are on a business trip or on holiday.

The building that is now the Pest Buda Bistro & Hotel was built in 1696 as a mansion and has since been converted into a luxurious 10-room hotel. Over the years, this building has served as a tavern and restaurant and it even served as the first hotel in Hungary. At Pest Buda Bistro & Hotel, upscale modernity meets country-house comfort while maintaining an urban atmosphere in the historic building.   Many people simply drop by for an evening meal at the hotel's restaurant, but those who stay at the quaint hotel have given it outstanding reviews for the helpful staff, charming atmosphere, and amazing location.  Just a few minutes walk from the hotel gets you to the Buda Castle neighborhood where you'll find incredible food and famous sites and monuments such as the Royal Palace and the Mathias Church. Though the hotel only opened in 2016, you will feel the incredible history and energy as soon as you enter the hotel- a true gem in the hospitality industry.

World Jewish Travel was thrilled at #IMTM 2024 to present a copy of the WJT Jewish Silk Road Pressbook to the CEO of the Azerbaijan National Tourism Board Florian Sengstschmid and Jamilya Talibzade its Israeli representative Azerbaijan Tourism Board (ATB).

The Pressbook celebrates the one year anniversary of the Jewish Silk Road Portal launch, an amazing example of using Jewish travel as a means of cultural diplomacy, whilst highlighting the significant Jewish contribution to the ancient trade route. Kudos to our participating partners from the Kiriaty Foundation (Turkey), National Board of Tourism of #Georgia, National Board of Tourism of #Uzbekistan, and Israeli Embassy of #India.
