A Journey Across the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem

The Mount of Olives is a limestone mountain ridge rising directly east of Jerusalem’s Old City across the Kidron Valley. As you look out from its summit, you are met with an expansive vantage point over the ancient walls and the Temple Mount. Named for the agricultural groves that historically covered its slopes, this natural boundary between the city and the Judean Desert remains a central destination for Holy Land pilgrimage.

For Christians, walking the paths of this ridge offers a physical connection to the final days of Jesus. As you descend the western slope, you pass ancient olive trees and a dense concentration of churches serving Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Protestant communities. It was here that Jesus wept over the city’s future and prayed before his arrest. As recorded in the Gospel of Luke, Jesus “went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him.” Today, you can visit the Garden of Gethsemane, the adjacent Church of All Nations, and the Russian Orthodox Church of Maria Magdalene, recognizable by its distinct golden domes.

Further along the hillside, the landscape shifts into a vast expanse of stone monuments. This area encompasses the Jerusalem Jewish cemetery, the largest and most important Jewish burial ground in the world, with burials dating back roughly 3,000 years. Holding an estimated 150,000 graves, it rests on a site that holds deep eschatological meaning in Jewish tradition as the prophesied location for the resurrection of the dead.

Continuing your visit toward the summit, you will find the Convent of Pater Noster, where the Lord’s Prayer is displayed in dozens of languages, and the Chapel of the Ascension. Tracing the routes across the mount allows you to observe the overlapping layers of faith, history, and memory that shape the region.
