Exploring the Biblical Archaeology of Ancient Lachish

As you approach the earthen mound of Tel Lachish, you are stepping into a landscape that once rivaled Jerusalem in significance. Located southeast of modern Kiryat Gat, these ancient ruins offer a tangible connection to the history of the Judean Lowland. Walking through the site, you’ll see the reconstructed remains of massive Judean city gates and the foundations of a central palace-fortress that anchored this heavily fortified settlement.

The physical landscape reveals centuries of conflict and survival. As you explore the southwestern slope, you will encounter the world’s oldest known siege ramp, constructed by the Assyrian army under King Sennacherib in 701 BCE. Looking closely, you can also spot the remains of a defensive counter-ramp built by the Judean defenders in a desperate attempt to hold the city. The stones and earth here corroborate the historical accounts of the Assyrian invasion during the reign of King Hezekiah.

Further excavations across this prominent site of biblical archaeology in the Holy Land have yielded remarkable artifacts. Archaeologists uncovered the famous Lachish Letters, a collection of inscribed clay ostraca containing military correspondence from the city’s final days before the Babylonian destruction in 586 BCE. These letters are notable for their early, everyday use of the Tetragrammaton, the name of the God of Israel. You’ll also learn about the archaic Hebrew stamp seals reading “belonging to the king,” found extensively on storage jars in the destruction layer.

Standing among the ruins, the deep cultural and spiritual weight of Lachish becomes clear. Mentioned frequently in the books of Joshua, Kings, and Jeremiah, the city serves as a physical touchstone for Jewish and Christian visitors alike. Wandering through these ancient paths allows you to connect directly with the material evidence of ancient Judean culture and the enduring historical memory of the biblical narrative.
