The Great Synagogue of Florence is one of the largest synagogues in South-central Europe!

It was build between 1874 and 1982 to celebrate the Jewish community being granted the status of free citizens.

During World War II, Nazis used the synagogue as a storehouse, later planning to destroy it using explosives. However, resistance fighters defused most of the explosives and only a limited amount of damage was done. The synagogue was fully restored after the war and today houses the Jewish Museum of Florence.
